1. Midland 1964-65 Coach Hank Kuzma. Beat Steel High (Dennis Stewart, 6'6, Michigan, NBA) 90-61 in Class A (highest class at the time) state championship game to close out 28-0 season. Averaged 78.5 ppg. with starters seldom playing much if at all in the fourth quarter. Leading scorer was 6'6 Sr.Sim Hill (West Texas State, ABA), 6'4 Ron Brown (second leading scorer, tough rebounder), 5'11 Sr. Norm Van Lier (third leading scorer, St. Francis, NBA), 6'2 Jr. Brent Lake and 5'8 junior Steve Alston. First subs were 6' SO Rich Mahurt (Purdue football) and 5'9 SO John Williams. Also off the bench, all seniors, were 5'7 Jim Miller, 6' Aaron Berry, 5'11 Joe Prodonovich and 6'1 Rich House. There were several juniors and sophs who split time between varsity and JV.
2. Ambridge 1966-67 Coach Chuck Devenzio. Undefeated (27-0) Bridgers thumped a good Chester team 93-61in state final. Leading scorer was 6'6 JR Dennis Wuycik (North Carolina, ABA, 25 ppg, 15 rpg). 5'10 Dick Devenzio (Duke) ran the ball club and scored 20 ppg. with 12 assists per game. 6'10 Frank Kaufman (Purdue) was third scorer (15 ppg) and inside force (12 rpg.) Other starters were 6' SR Walt Ostrowski and 5'9 senior Phil DePasquale. Bench included seniors Ron Fiorvanti (5'8), Tom DeMarco (5'10) and Dom Russo (6'2), 5'9 junior Gary Robinson, and sophs Rich Iorfido (5'9) and Paul Kamzelski (6'1)
3. Pittsburgh Schenley 1970-71, is generally considered among the top three in PIAA history even though they lost three games (Farrell, New Castle and Altoona) during the season. Coached by Spencer Watkins the Spartans beat Norristown (Henry Williams, Jacksonville, ABA) in the final on their way to a 23-3 season scoring 86 ppg while giving up 62.5. Headliner was 6'7 Maurice Lucas (Marquette, NBA) who scored around 25 ppg and hauled down 20 rpg. Second leading scorer was 6'2 Anthony (Ricky) Coleman (Jacksonville) who average around 18 ppg. Third leading scorer was 6'3 SO Robert "Jeep" Kelly (UNLV) at around 17 ppg. 6'5 Tom Thornton (Detroit) and 5'11 SR Jeff Matthews rounded out the starting five. 6'2 seniors Ed Woods and Norie Coney and 5'9 senior Ralph Smith were the first subs with limited playing time.
4. Plymouth-Whitemarsh 1962-63 Coach Hank Stofko. Beat Norwin (6'10 John Naponic, Virginia) 74-54 to cap 24-0 season. Leading scorer was 6'3 Bob Oleszewski (17 ppg.) followed by 6'5 Ed Szczesny (La Salle, 15 ppg.) 6'2 strong man John Thompson (Penn State football) helped Szczesny on the boards and was a double figure scorer. Back court was manned by 6'1 senior Jim Moore and 6' junior John Pergine (Notre Dame football, NFL.) Sixth man was 5'8 Carl Buccholz. Bench included seniors Robert McKay( 5'8) , Joe Gallagher (6), and Ron Douglass (5'10); juniors Bill Mitchell (5'10), Hal Frankenfield (6'1), John Hanley (6') and Wayne Staley (6'). Team averaged 66 ppg.
5. Uniontown 1963-64 Coach Abe Everhart. Averaged 79.6 ppg on way to 28-0 season. Beat Plymouth Whitemarsh 62-51 in title game. 6'2 SR leaper Stuart Lantz (Nebraska, NBA) scored just under 20 ppg. 6'2 217 lb. JR Pat Yates and 6' SR Ben Gregory (Nebraska, NFL) were also double figure scorers. 6' SR Jim Rae and 6'3 SO Ray Parson (Minnesota, NFL) rounded out the starting five. First sub was 6' SR Paul Yezbak. Seniors Lee Collier (6'), Jake Barkett (6'3), John Miller (6'3) and juniors Chris Cluss (5'10), Chuck Beckwith (5'6), Dave Zebrasky (5'8), Howard Bates (6'1), Gene Huey (5'10, Wyoming, NFL) and Ray Stephens (6', Minnesota, NFL) rounded out the squad. Great combination of speed, quickness and strength as Lantz could dunk with ease from a standing jump and Yates played out front on the press.
6. Darby-Colwyn 1962-63 Coach Hal Blitman. Undefeated class B state champions two years in a row. Had 54 game winning streak, a state record that was subsequently broken by Gene Banks' West Phila. team. Many observers felt that they were the best team in the state in 1963. Leading scorer was 6' Parade All-American Charles Coleman (Villanova). Big man was 6'8 JR Hal Booker (Cheney State, ABA, Parade All-American in 1964.) Other starters included 5'11 SR Dave Kennard, the consumate point guard, 6'4 SR Adrian Harmon and 5'11 Jim Realer. Booker, Kennard and Realer followed coach Blitman to Cheyney State and were part of a team that lost five games over the next four years. Harmon played at Maryland State. Bench included 6'3 SR Jim Gilliam, 5'7 SO Wayne Trent, 5'6 JR Harry Nelson, 6'5 JR Bill Hood, 5'10 SR Tom Crosson, 5'8 SO Harry Collins and 6'1 SR Charles Lansberry.
7. Farrell 1959-60 Coach Ed McCluskey Team went 30-1 after taking 1959 state title with 27-2 record. Beat Radnor 61-40 in state final. Leading scorer was 5'10 Willie Somerset (16ppg., Duquesne, NBA) while 6'4 Brian Generalovich (11ppg., Pitt, drafted by NFL and NBA but opted for dental school) controlled the boards. 5'8 SR Lou Mastrian (7ppg), 6'1 JR Willie Alford (7 ppg., Gannon Univ.) and 5'9 SR Paul Kudelko (4ppg., Pitt) rounded out the starting five. First subs were 5'11 SO Robert Samuels, 5'10 JR John Kahl and 6'1 JR Robert Clarke, all around 2 ppg. Others included 5' 9 SR Lou Nickoloff, 5'11 SO Jack Gunsley, 6'3 SR Charles Marin (Penn State), 5'10 SR's Mike Smith and Alfred LaCamera and 6'1 SO Jack Marin (Duke, NBA).
8. Pittsburgh Fifth Avenue 1975-76 Coached by Elmer Guckert. Went 15-0 in strike-shortened season that didn't begin until January. Starters were 6'6 JR Sam Clancy (Pitt, NFL), 6'7 SR Bill Clarke (Duquesne), 5'11 JR David Kennedy (Cincinnati, drafted by Dallas Mavericks), 6' SR James Whitmer and 5'8 JR Warner Macklin. First subs were 6'3 JR Edwin Peoples and 6'2 JR Rodney Walker. Others included 6' SR Fred Marshall, 5'11 SR Ken Rucker and 6'2 JR Stanley Hazlip. Fifth Ave. closed in 1976 and the juniors went to newly established Brashear for their senior season. Brashear lost to the Gene Banks-led 1976-77 West Phila. Speedboys by three points in the Johnstown Christmas tournament. Pittsburgh papers didn't provide much coverage but Clancy and Clarke scored 15-20 ppg, Kennedy was 10-12 ppg and Macklin was considered one of the top point guards to come out of the city.
9. Williamsport 1983-84 Coach Pete White Beat Erie Cathedral Prep 68-61 in state final to cap 30-0 season. Starting five included 6'6 SR Jim Mexdorf (17.6 ppg), 6'3 SR Jeff Churba (17.1 ppg), 6' SR Peter White (14.1 ppg), 5'8 SR Marc Graves (13.0 ppg) and 5'11 JR Seth Burch (5.4 ppg). First subs were 5'9 SR Mickey Lockwood, 5'10 JR Rik Niklaus, 5'10 SO Scott Peterson and 6'3 JR Dan Pagana. Others included 5'10 JR Joe Bower, 6'3 SO Scott Richardson and 6'1 FR Victor Brace-Harvey. White, the coach's son, played at Princeton. Marc Graves, who won slam dunk contest at post-season all star game, played at Wilkes (Bo Ryan's alma mater)
